Concrete Steps in Summertown & Southern Middle Tennessee

Concrete steps take constant impact and weather exposure. We build them with proper footings, consistent riser heights, and finishes that grip when wet.

Concrete steps see more concentrated wear than any other part of your property. Every person walking in and out of your home lands their full weight on the same small area, and steps are fully exposed to rain, ice, and direct sunlight. Steps that are poorly built — inadequate footings, inconsistent riser heights, smooth slippery surfaces — are both a safety hazard and an expensive problem to fix later.

We build concrete steps on proper footings that extend below the frost line in Tennessee (minimum 12 inches in this part of the state). The footing supports the full weight of the steps independently from the building foundation, which prevents the common problem of steps pulling away from the house as the soil settles. We tie into the foundation with rebar dowels where appropriate, but the steps must be structurally independent.

Consistency in riser height is critical — building code requires risers to be within 3/8 inch of each other in a set of stairs. Uneven risers are the most common cause of trips and falls on stairs. We form each step precisely and verify measurements before pouring. Standard residential risers are 7 to 7.75 inches, and treads are a minimum of 10 inches deep. We can adjust these dimensions within code limits to work with your specific elevation change.

Every step surface gets a broom finish or equivalent non-slip texture. We also form a slight pitch on each tread (about 1/8 inch per foot) so water drains off rather than pooling and freezing in winter. For front stoops and landings, we maintain the same drainage pitch and ensure the landing is at least 36 inches deep — wide enough to open a storm door while standing on the landing safely.

Our Concrete Steps Process

Every job follows a proven process to ensure lasting results and protect your property throughout.

1

Measurement & Planning

We measure the total rise, plan the number of steps and riser heights, and design the footing to meet local building requirements.

2

Footing & Forming

We dig footings below frost line, pour the footing, then build step forms with precise riser measurements.

3

Pour & Finish

Steps are poured with reinforced concrete, surfaces are broom-finished for traction, and edges are rounded for a clean look.

4

Strip & Seal

Forms are removed, any voids or imperfections are addressed, and a sealer is applied to protect the new concrete.

What Customers Say

Real reviews from homeowners and businesses across Southern Middle Tennessee.

We needed new front steps and a small porch slab poured at our home in Loretto. The old wooden steps were rotting and unsafe. George built concrete steps with a broom finish for grip and they look a hundred times better. He matched the height perfectly to our existing door threshold.

Loretto

We had George's crew replace our old driveway in Lawrenceburg. The original was 20 years old and had heaved from tree roots. They tore out the old concrete, regraded everything, and poured a new 4-inch reinforced driveway with proper expansion joints. Looks fantastic and the price was very fair for the amount of work involved.

Lawrenceburg

George built a retaining wall along our property line in Culleoka where the yard drops off toward the creek. It's about 40 feet long and 3 feet tall. He included proper drainage behind the wall so water pressure wouldn't push it over. That was two years ago and it hasn't moved an inch despite some heavy rains.
